Monday

- Click here to listen to a read-aloud of The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. This is a story about the beauty of the rainforest and why it is important to protect it. 

- As you listen, think about the theme (also called the central message) of the story. What does the author want you to learn from the story? Use this guide to help you out.

Writing/Grammar:  

- In our story this week there is a lot of sensory language. Sensory language helps us to connect to an image, scene, or story by using our five senses to create an image or description. Understanding sensory language also helps us as writers to create more vivid descriptions and stories.

- Today, explore these examples of sensory language for each of the five senses. 

​

Math: 

- We are starting a new math unit today. It is all about fractions. Watch this introductory video to get started. 

- After watching, login to Khan Academy to continue learning. Your login information can be found here

- Today you should complete the following activity in Module 5 Topic A:

     * Intro to fractions

     * Cutting shapes into equal parts video

     * Cut shapes into equal parts exercise

Social Studies:

- Last week we started learning about colonial times and what life was like for the colonists. We are continuing on today. The colonists had lots of rules! Read about them here. As you read, think about what rules we have today.

​

Religion:

- This week we will read Unit 2 Chapter 11: The Parish is our Home.

- You can choose to read it all at once or read a page each day. Whatever works best for you!

Spelling:

- Here are this week's spelling words. These are for you to practice throughout the week and below are some different ways to practice your spelling words. There won't be a quiz at the end of the week, but practicing each week will help you stay on top of your spelling skills!

Spelling City: All these games already have the spelling list input, so just choose a game and press play to get started. 

Spelling Choice Board: Choose a different activity from the choice board each day to practice with your list of words.

Tuesday

- Start off today with this reflection question.

- Today we'll explore more of the theme from yesterday's read aloud. Check out this guide to learn more about figuring out the theme of a story. 

- What do you think the theme of The Great Kapok Tree is? What is the author trying to tell you? What is important? Fill out this form once you have an answer. 

- To finish today's reading work, read through this nonfiction passage, The Amazon River

Writing/Grammar: 

- Sensory Language Sort: Using the words in the word bank, sort them into the correct sensory language column.

Wednesday

- Start off today with this reflection question.

- Read this fiction passage, The Rainforest Project. Then answer the comprehension questions. Be sure to use evidence from the text to answer the questions. 

 

Writing/Grammar:  

- Today we're going to make a collaborative list of sensory language words. Click here to find the list and then add at least one word under each column. You should add a word for each of the five senses.

Math: 

- We are continuing to work on Khan Academy. Your login information can be found here

- Today you should complete the following activities under Topic B:

     * Recognize fractions

     * Recognizing fractions greater than 1

Social Studies:

- Homes were also very different during colonial times. Read about what these homes were like here. As you read, think about your own home. Are there any similarities or differences?

- Today you will read this informational book, The World's Rainforests. As you read, try and make connections to The Great Kapok Tree. Think about all the resources that rainforests provide and why they should be protected.

Writing/Grammar: 

- Identifying sensory language: Click here to find your work for today. Read each sentence and identify the sensory word in each sentence. Remember to think of the five senses: sight, smell, sound, taste & touch.

Math:

     * Identifying numerators and denominators

     * Understand numerators and denominators

Social Studies: 

- In addition to the country and city homes, some colonists in the south lived on plantations. Read more about them here

- After you read, think about the colonists behavior so far. They have come to America and taken land from the natives. Now they have created large plantations where slaves do all of the work. What do you think about this? How would you describe the colonists?

​

Religion: 

- This week we will read Unit 2 Chapter 11: The Parish is our Home.

- You can choose to read it all at once or read a page each day. Whatever works best for you!

Friday

- Start off with this reflection question.

- Today you will answer this form with comprehension questions about rainforests and specifically from The Great Kapok Tree. It might be helpful to listen to the read aloud once more before answering the questions. 

- Extra: Here is a guided drawing of a jaguar, one of the animals in the rainforest and in the The Great Kapok Tree. Try it out for fun!

 

Writing/Grammar:  

- Today you'll add a post to our sensory language board. Write three sentences, each with a different sensory language word. Check out my example to see what yours should look like and follow the same format.

Math: 

- We are switching things up today and are going to do some additional fraction practice on Splash Math. Your login information is here and the class code is DYXAGI. You should complete two assignments today. 

     * Identifying Fractions

     * Model Fractions

Social Studies: 

- Catch up day! Use today to catch up on any reading from this week that you haven't read yet.

- If you're already caught up, read through this short passage and see if you can fill in the blanks to check your own understanding. 

​

Religion:

-  Finish reading Unit 2 Chapter 11: The Parish is our Home.

- Then answer this question: What kind of events happen in your parish (or spiritual community) and what makes them special? Add your answer to the board. I can't wait read all of them!
