Monday

Start your day off with the video guide.

Reading:

- Today you will listen to a read-aloud. Before listening, think about this question.

- The story that you will listen to today is a memoir. A memoir is a collection of memories that someone (or something) writes about their own life.

- Before listening, we are going to think about the author's purpose for writing this memoir. Click here to watch a video about author's purpose and then read this guide. When thinking about an author's purpose we can always think of PIE!

- After reading, you can listen to Memoirs of a Hamster. As you listen, think about whether the author's purpose is to persuade, inform, or entertain.

Grammar:

- This week we are going to practice similes and metaphors. A simile is a comparison of two things that uses the words 'like' or 'as'. A metaphor is a comparison that does not use 'like' or 'as' and compares two things that are not alike. Read more about similes and metaphors before getting started.

- Read through some examples here

- Finish with this activity. Read each comparison and decide whether it is a simile or metaphor. Remember, a simile must use either 'like' or 'as' to make a comparison.

Math:

- Today in math we are finishing up our practice with fractions greater than 1 on a number line. We will continue to use this skill as we move forward with our study of fractions, so it is really important that you feel confident in this skill!

- We are going to start off with some practice on Splash Math. Your login information is here and the class code is DYXAGI. You should complete one assignment today.

*Represent Fractions on a Number Line

- Complete this activity. You can either print it out or complete it on your own paper. After completing, send me a picture (in an email) so that I can check your work. Make sure your work is neat and organized.

Science:

- For these next two weeks, you are going to be a physicist! A physicist is a special scientist who studies motion, forces, and energy.

- To begin, I want you to listen to my video. (My dog makes a special appearance!)

- The two main forces we are going to talk about are push and pull. We do these ALL THE TIME. Learn more about them by listening to this song!

- Now I want you to think about examples of when you use these forces throughout the day. Use this recorder as a guide.

- Here are some examples that I thought of.

     * I push off the ground when I go for a run.

     * I pull a fork towards my mouth when I eat lunch.

     * I pull open the door to leave my room.

     * I push the book shut when I am finished reading.

Religion:

- This week we will read Unit 3 Chapter 17: We Worship at Mass.

- You can choose to read it all at once or read a page each day. Whatever works best for you!

Spelling:

- Here are this week's spelling words. These are for you to practice throughout the week and below are some different ways to practice your spelling words. There won't be a quiz at the end of the week, but practicing each week will help you stay on top of your spelling skills!

Spelling City: All these games already have the spelling list input, so just choose a game and press play to get started.

Spelling Choice Board: Choose a different activity from the choice board each day to practice with your list of words.

Creativity Challenge:

- I cannot put into words how impressed I have been with all of your creations! They are simply AMAZING! I love how different and unique everyone's creations have been. Keep up the fantastic work!

- CHALLENGE: Your challenge this week is to create a drawing using only three shapes. For example, I might draw a castle using only rectangles, circles, and triangles. I can use as many rectangles, circles, and triangles as I need, but those are the only shapes I can include in the drawing. You can choose to draw whatever you like! Once you have completed your drawing, email me a picture telling me what it is and what shapes you used. I am excited to see your creations!

Tuesday

Start your day off with the video guide.

Reading:

- Start off today with this reflection question.

- Today we are going to further explore author's purpose. These two videos play a Game Show about author's purpose. The contests hear a passage and then try to determine if the author is intending to persuade, inform, or entertain. Watch each video and try to see if you can guess the author's purpose as well.

       *Video 1

       *Video 2

- Now think about the story that you listened to yesterday, Memoirs of a Hamster. What do you think the author's purpose was and why do you think this? Once you have an idea, write your answer here

- To finish today's reading work, read this fiction passage, The Class Pet, and answer the comprehension questions using evidence from the text to support your answers.

Grammar:

- Today you are going to write similes that help describe Seymour from Memoirs of a Hamster. You can use this template as a guide, but feel free to write them on your own paper or a notebook.

- Here are a few examples:

     * Seymour is as fuzzy as a blanket.

     * Seymour is as quick as a tiger.

     * Seymour is as curious as a baby.

Math:

- Today we are going to start learning about equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions have an equal value. On a fraction number line model, they land on the same point. In a shape model, they take up the same amount of space.

- Watch this video to learn more about equivalent fractions.

- Read through this lesson to further explore equivalent fractions and what they look like.

- Finish today's work with this practice page. Shade in the given fraction on the shape. If the shaded space is the exact same size, write equivalent. If not, write not equivalent on the line.

Science:

- Today we are going to continue to learn about forces.

- Start off by watching this tightrope walker

*As you watch, think about these questions:

           - Is the man in motion? How do you know?

           - Is he using force (push/pull)? How do you know?

           - Why do you think the man is using a pole?

           - What would happen if a big wind came along?

- As you thought about these questions, the word "balance" probably popped into your head. The man used the pole to help him stay balanced and if the wind blew he might become unbalanced.

- When we think about balanced and unbalanced forces, I want you to think of the game tug-of-war.

- In the top picture, both sides are pulling equally so it is balanced.

- In the bottom picture, the left side is pulling harder so the forces are unbalanced.

- To finish today, think of an activity that requires balance here.

Religion:

- This week we will read Unit 3 Chapter 17: We Worship at Mass.

- You can choose to read it all at once or read a page each day. Whatever works best for you!

Wednesday

Start your day off with the video guide.

Reading:

- Start off today with this reflection question.

- Read this nonfiction passage, Rabbits. Then answer the comprehension question. Be sure to use evidence from the text to answer the questions.

- What do you think the author's purpose was in this passage? Was the author trying to persuade, inform, or entertain?

Grammar:

- Today you are going to practice metaphors with this activity. Read through each sentence and use the word bank at the bottom to decide which word best completes each metaphor. Think about the qualities of each noun and what the comparison is trying to tell the reader.

Math:

- Today we're going to continue to learn about equivalent fractions. We learned yesterday that equivalent fractions have an equal value even though they have different numbers. On a fraction number line model, they land on the same point. In a shape model, they take up the same amount of space.

- Watch this video to refresh your memory about equivalent fractions.

- Read through this lesson to further explore equivalent fractions and what they look like.

- Finish by practicing identifying these equivalent fractions in this activity. After you are finished, you can check your work here

Science:

- Today and tomorrow we are going to be learning about how energy can move from one object to another object.

- Check out this guide first.

- Let's examine this more. Check out my experiment here

Religion:

- This week we will read Unit 3 Chapter 17: We Worship at Mass.

- You can choose to read it all at once or read a page each day. Whatever works best for you!

thursday

Start your day off with the video guide.

Reading:

- Start off with this reflection question.

- Today you will read a nonfiction text titled Remarkable Rodents. You will learn about five different rodents that are common pets. As you read, think about the author's purpose. Is the author trying to persuade, inform, or entertain the audience with their text?

Grammar:

- Have some fun today with this Simile Mad Lib. Be careful to include the correct parts of speech (review them here) to create a silly story full of similes! Be creative and have fun with it!

Math:

- We're going to continue learning about equivalent fractions today. We have learned that equivalent fractions have an equal value even though they have different numbers. On a fraction number line model, they land on the same point. In a shape model, they take up the same amount of space.

- If you need a refresher, start out by watching this video.

- Read through this lesson to further explore equivalent fractions and what they look like.

- Finish by practicing identifying these equivalent fractions in this activity. After you are finished, you can check your work here

Science:

- Yesterday we talked about how energy can move from one place to another. It never just disappears.

- I showed how this was true yesterday with my tennis ball experiment. Today, I'd like you to brainstorm some ways that energy can transfer from one place to another.

- Here are some examples that I thought of to help you get started.

*Example: Energy is transferred from my foot to a soccer ball when I kick it.

Energy is transferred from my hands to the swing when I push it.

Energy is transferred from my hands to the ball when I throw it.

- Write three of your own examples here

-

Religion:

- This week we will read Unit 3 Chapter 17: We Worship at Mass.

- You can choose to read it all at once or read a page each day. Whatever works best for you!
